The draw for the last 16, quarter-final and semi-final rounds was made today, and set up some intriguing ties to come. This past week we’ve seen some incredible shocks. Atlético Madrid, Villarreal, Real Zaragoza and Real Betis were all knocked out by opposition from a lower level. For two of the clubs, the results happened to be the final straw in regards to their coaches, as Juan Carlos Garrido and Gregorio Manzano were moved on.
In regards to the last 16,Valencia vs. Sevilla and Real Madrid vs. Málaga take prestige, but Albacete will get a chance to provide another shock by facing Athletic. Mirandés, who sent Villarreal out of the competition, will fancy their chances once again by facing a struggling Racing Santander who will have priority based on their league status.
The quarter finals are where things get more intriguing though, as we could potentially see a Basque Derby as well as another Clásico. It’s reassuring to know this year it won’t be a Clásico final, as we at spanishfootball.info would like to see a different team battling out for Spain’s second most prestigious trophy.
