Europa League: Atlético Madrid 2 Stromgodset 1

Atlético Madrid became the first Spanish side back in competitive action as they took on Norwegian side Stromgodset in the first round of their Europa League qualifier last night. Gregorio Manzano’s side lined up without the recently departed Kun Aguero but included new signing Adrián Lopez who debuted with two assists. In what was a mixed night for Atlético’s new boys, Brazilian defender Miranda was shown a straight red card for a last man challenge. It was a more familiar face who scored both goals as Juan Antonio Reyes got his season off to a flier with strikes in 53rd and 73rd minutes respectively. Those two strikes seemed to have Atlético coasting but a defensive lapse in the 80th minute allowed Storflor to pull one back for the visitors. Around 25,000 turned up to watch the tie and there was a special reception for Copa America winner Diego Forlán who played for 73 minutes. Atlético travel to Norway next week hoping to avoid an embarrassing early exit from the tournament they won two seasons ago.
